MP3 is shorthand for Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), Audio Layer 3. Layer 3 is the level of audio compression used. What this means is that the total file size is smaller, allowing for more storage without sacrificing audio quality.
Tantor offers audiobooks in the MP3 format as digital downloads and as a physical product, an MP3-CD.
Both downloads and MP3-CDs are comprised of data files, while audio CDs contain audio files. Since they are data files, you need a special player to listen to MP3 files.
Portable MP3 devices (iPod, Zune, even cell phones) can be loaded with MP3 files, downloaded directly from Tantor.com or transferred from an MP3-CD to a computer, then moved to a portable device.
There are many new CD players that are listed as MP3-CD compatible. Also, many new cars have MP3-compatible audio systems. A new CD player that is MP3-compatible can play regular audio CDs; however many old CD players cannot play MP3-CDs. In addition, computer media players (Windows Media Player, iTunes) can play MP3s.
Our MP3-CDs can hold up to 12.5 hours of audio at 128 kbps, compared to a regular audio CD, which holds 74 minutes of audio. Also, if the primary use of the audiobook is to be played on an MP3 device, it is the most practical, as the longer tracks create less file "clutter" and MP3-CD audiobooks cost less, averaging only $20-$30. This all makes MP3 an excellent choice for audiobooks.

How to Sync your MP3 device with Windows Media Player. |
Set up your device:
When you connect a device for the first time, the Player selects the sync method (automatic or manual) that works best for your device:
- Automatic. If your device's storage capacity is more than 4 gigabytes (GB) and your entire library can fit on the device, the Player automatically syncs your entire library. You can also choose what syncs automatically by selecting the playlists you want to sync. With this option, the Player syncs your digital media files to the device to mirror your library when you connect it to your computer or when you change sync settings.
- Manual. With this option, you pick specific files or playlists you want to sync each time you want to make changes to the digital media files on your device, and you manually remove files from your device.
After your device is set up the first time, if you want to, you can switch between automatic and manual sync.
To set up a device
- Start the Player, turn on your device, and then connect your device to your computer. If prompted, select the option to sync the device using Windows Media Player.
- Do one of the following:
- If the Player has selected to sync your device automatically, click Finish. When you do so, the Player will sync your entire library to your device. After that, your device will sync every time you connect it to your computer.
- If the Player has selected to sync your device manually, click Finish. Then, in the Sync tab, you must select the files and playlists you want to sync manually.
The Player adds the device to the Navigation pane with all of the default categories found in the library, as shown in the following screen shot.

Choose and prioritize what syncs automatically:
If your device syncs automatically, you don't have to sync your entire library. Instead, you can choose from existing playlists or create new playlists of files that you want to sync. The playlists you select will then sync to your device every time you connect it to your computer.
To choose what syncs automatically
- Click the arrow below the Sync tab, point to the name of the device, and then click Set Up Sync, as shown in the following screen shot.

- The Device Setup dialog box appears, as shown in the following screen shot.
- In the Available playlists list, select the existing playlists you want to sync and then click Add.
- To create a playlist, click New Auto Playlist and follow the steps on the screen to specify criteria for files in the auto playlist.
- To remove a playlist, click the playlist in the Playlists to sync list, and then click Remove.
- Do one of the following:
- In the Playlists to sync list, select a playlist, one at a time, and click the Priority arrows to arrange them in the order that you want them to sync, as shown in the following screen shot. If your device fills up before sync is complete, files and playlists that are lower in priority on the list may not sync. You can also monitor how much remaining space is available on the device from this list.

- Select the Shuffle what syncs check box if you want the Player to shuffle the files that are in the playlists you have selected to sync. With this option, every time you connect your device, the files on the device are removed and a new set of files (from the playlists in the Playlists to sync list) are added to the device. This option is useful if you have a device with limited storage capacity, you like to rotate through your music, or if your library has grown too large to fit on your device.

Select and shuffle items with manual sync:
If you sync manually, you must create a list of files and playlists you want to sync each time you want to make changes to the files on your device, and you must manually remove files from your device. You can also use the Player to shuffle which songs from your playlists sync to your device.
To select items to sync manually
- Start the Player, turn on and connect your device to your computer, and then click the Sync tab.
- If you need to clear the List pane before beginning, click the Clear List pane button
.
- If more than one device is connected, in the Navigation pane, click the device you want to sync.
- Drag items such as files, albums, and playlists to the List pane to add them to the list of items to sync, as shown in the following screen shot.
To select multiple adjacent items, press and hold the SHIFT key while selecting. To select nonadjacent items, press and hold the CTRL key while selecting.
- To remove items, select one or more items in the List pane, and then click Remove from List, as shown in the following screen shot.

- In the List pane, verify that the items you have selected to sync will all fit on the device, as shown in the following screen shot. If necessary, remove items from the list.

- Click Start Sync.
To shuffle manual sync items on a device
- Start the Player, turn on and connect your device to your computer, and then click the Sync tab.
- Click the arrow below the Sync tab, point to the device, and then click Shuffle, as shown in the following screen shot.
—or—
In the List pane, click Shuffle music to have the Player automatically add a shuffled set of songs from your library to the List pane, as shown in the following screen shot.

- Add or remove any songs you want, and then click Shuffle Now.

iPod
Apple's iPod is one of the most popular portable media players out there. It offers a variety of ways to enjoy listening to your audiobooks. However, this can add some extra steps in getting the most out of your audiobook. Primarily, it requires the use of Apple's iTunes. Some other things to consider are if the iPod is set to "automatic" or "manual" update and if the audiobook is audio CD or MP3-CD format. Also, the iPod Shuffle, as a "shuffle" player, does not accommodate audiobooks well. A bonus for users who are ambitious is that iPods recognize special "audiobook" files that have the ability to bookmark, adjust playback speed, and more.
In order to listen to your audiobook, you must transfer it from the CD to your computer, then onto your iPod. Depending on the audiobook format and iPod settings, there are different ways to go about doing this. For this tutorial you will need to have iTunes installed. If you do not, you will need to download iTunes, which is a free media program provided by Apple, and install it. Only download and install software from official vendors to ensure the security of your computer and personal information.

Audio CD to iPod
Using an audio CD audiobook with iPod on automatic update.
When a disc is inserted into a computer, iTunes will contact the Gracenote online database (requires an internet connection) and download
"album" information, filling in track information, title, and author. Many of our new titles are in the database. However, if the audiobook
has not yet been entered into the online database, you will have to rename all of the tracks in sequential order for the iPod to play the audiobook tracks in the proper order.

How to Sync your iPod device with iTunes.
|
Step 1: Open iTunes and insert disc 1 into the computer. iTunes will attempt to contact the Gracenote online database and download 'album' information.
Step 2:Click "Import CD"
If the audiobook has track information, repeat for all discs. If not, when the disc is finished importing, go to [Library]››[music] and locate the tracks that were just imported. "Right-click" on the track, choose ››[Get Info]››[info] and enter track information. You can then choose "next" to rename the next track. If this is not done, when all the CDs have been imported, you will be left with
several copies of "track 1", "track 2", etc.
Step 3: When all discs have been imported, connect the iPod to the computer and iTunes will automatically sync to the iPod.

Using a MP3-CD audiobook with iPod on manual update.
This is probably the quickest and most straightforward way. Since it is basically transferring data files there are slightly different methods of doing it, essentially...
Step 1: Insert the MP3-CD into the computer and open it to view the files, [My Computer]››[CD drive letter].
Step 2: Open iTunes and connect iPod. In iTunes, browse to the iPod's music, [iPod name]››[music].
Step 3: Select all files from the CD (ctrl+a) and click-and-drag/copy+paste into [iTunes]››[iPod]››[music].
If there is some difficulty taking the files straight from the CD to the iPod, it may be easier to copy the files to the computer first. Create a folder on the computer named the title of the audiobook. Click-and-drag/copy+paste the files from the CD to this folder, then from there to the iPod.
